A hair transplant session usually takes 5 to 7 hours, depending on the number of grafts and the size of the area. It's done in one day and you go home the same day.
A hair transplant is done under local anaesthetic, so you don't feel pain during the session — only a small sting when the anaesthetic is injected. Afterwards you may feel mild tightness or soreness in the donor area for the first two days, easily managed with simple painkillers prescribed by the doctor.
In FUE, follicles are extracted from the donor area at the back of the head, tiny channels are opened in the bald area and the follicles are placed inside them. In DHI, opening the channel and implanting the follicle happen in one step using a special pen. The choice depends on your hair and the size of the area, and the doctor decides at the consultation.
The number of grafts depends on the degree of baldness, the size of the bare area and the density of the donor area. Smaller cases may need 2,000–3,000 grafts, larger ones 4,000 or more. The exact number can only be set after examining your scalp at the consultation.
The transplanted follicles are taken from the back of the head, which is not sensitive to DHT, the hormone behind genetic hair loss, so they keep growing permanently after the transplant. Your original hair in other areas may continue to thin, which is why the doctor may recommend supporting treatment to keep overall density.
Transplanted hair sheds in the first weeks — this is normal and is called shock loss. Real growth starts after 3 to 4 months, you'll see a clear difference by month six, and the final result in density and natural look is complete at around 12 months.
Most patients go back to office work after two to three days. Avoid heavy physical effort, sport and swimming for two weeks, and avoid direct sun and steam rooms for the first month.
Before you leave the clinic you get an aftercare kit with your medication and care products, plus written instructions for washing, sleeping position and medication. We follow up after the procedure to check on your recovery.
FUE leaves tiny pin-point marks in the donor area that are hidden under the hair once it grows around them. It doesn't leave a long linear scar like older techniques.

Yes, hair can be transplanted into scars or burn marks after assessing the skin and making sure the area has enough blood supply. These cases need more precise graft placement and may take more than one session.
Ideally you should be at least 22 to 25 years old, because at a younger age the pattern of hair loss is still developing, and an early transplant can look unbalanced as hair loss progresses later. Every case is assessed individually.
They're not a replacement when an area is completely bald, because these treatments strengthen existing follicles and don't create new ones. For thinning and early hair loss they may be enough on their own, and they're often used after a transplant to protect the result.
